Paloma Creek South drinks Mustang Special Utility District water, a changing mix of soft Trinity and Woodbine well water and Upper Trinity lake water that no published table gives a hardness figure for.

COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What each grain per gallon looks like at home.

With no figure for Paloma Creek South, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

PALOMA CREEK SOUTH’S WATER, BY HARDNESS

South of U.S. 380 on a blended supply whose lake share is seasonal and unmeasured

Paloma Creek South is on the lake-water side of a two-source district, at least part of the time. Mustang Special Utility District buys lake water, already treated, from Upper Trinity Regional Water District, and the join between the two systems is the Temple Dane pump station on FM 720, which Upper Trinity describes as a joint station it operates with Mustang. The federal facility record lists Temple Dane three ways: as a Mustang pump station with 2,000 gallon-a-minute pumps, as a 2 million gallon ground storage tank, and as the site of Mustang's Well 17, so purchased lake water and the district's own groundwater meet in the same tanks. Upper Trinity's treated water travels more than 103 miles of pipeline, between Justin and Celina and between Castle Hills and Sanger, averages about 30 million gallons a day across the year, and swings from roughly 15 million gallons a day in winter to more than 60 in summer when irrigation runs. Its 2025 report describes the source water simply as Lewisville and Chapman lakes.

Hardness is where the two waters part company, and only one of them is measured. Mustang's 2025 report puts total hardness in its groundwater at 4.773 ppm as calcium carbonate, 2025 samples from 3.68 through 5.48, with calcium at 1.22 ppm and magnesium at 0.420 ppm, soft on any scale. The mineral content is there in Mustang's well table, just not as hardness: 222 ppm sodium, 530 ppm total alkalinity, 261.4 ppm bicarbonate in the last measurement printed, sulfate 75.7, chloride 23.5, and a pH of 8.8, every one of them a wells result rather than a Paloma Creek South result. That is the chemistry of a deep well in the Trinity and Woodbine sands, where the state water board notes dissolved solids increase with depth, and it is the reverse of the calcium-and-magnesium water a reservoir gathers from the country it drains. For the Upper Trinity water the report prints regulated results only, no hardness, and Upper Trinity's own 2025 report does the same. There is no figure for the blend reaching Paloma Creek South, so this page gives none.

Mustang does not publish a pressure-zone map in its report, so we cannot tell a street south of U.S. 380 which tank it hangs from or how much of its day is lake water. What the record does show is that the swing is seasonal: Upper Trinity's summer deliveries run about four times its winter ones, and when Mustang moved its customers to Stage 2 of its drought plan on July 30, 2026, the notice posted for Paloma Creek residents tied the restrictions to high temperatures reducing the surface water available for treatment while demand strained the distribution system. A tap south of 380 may run soft well water in January and something nearer Dallas's 120 to 155 mg/L figure for the same Lewisville Lake water in July. A free water test reads the day's hardness in grains per gallon, and the softener to buy is the one sized for the hard end of that swing, because it still works in August.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Paloma Creek South, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Paloma Creek South.

Is Paloma Creek South’s water hard?

Not from any figure we can cite. Mustang's 2025 report prints 4.773 ppm, soft, for its wells and no figure for the lake water that shares its tanks at the Temple Dane pump station, and the mix shifts with the season. A free water test in your own kitchen gives the number for your house.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
