Paloma Creek.
No hardness figure on file for Paloma Creek yet.

Paloma Creek is served by Mustang Special Utility District, whose 2025 report tables three supplies, deep well water, Upper Trinity lake water and Sherman groundwater, and gives a hardness result for only one.

COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What each grain per gallon looks like at home.

With no figure for Paloma Creek, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

PALOMA CREEK’S WATER, BY HARDNESS

Three waters in one report, and no hardness figure for the blend at the tap

Mustang Special Utility District's 2025 water quality report is really three reports in one binding. The first covers the district's own Trinity and Woodbine wells, the second reprints what Upper Trinity Regional Water District measured at its treatment plant, and the third reprints the City of Sherman's results for the groundwater Sherman sells, a purchase the report attributes to the former Marilee district in Grayson County that Mustang absorbed. For a Paloma Creek address on U.S. 380, the first two are the ones that matter. Upper Trinity runs two plants: the Thomas E. Taylor plant in Lewisville, rated at 70 million gallons a day, which handles Lewisville and Ray Roberts water, and the Tom Harpool plant at Providence Village, the next community east along U.S. 380, rated at 30 million gallons a day and taking a share of the Jim Chapman Lake water that arrives by pipeline from northeast Texas. Both plants are being enlarged, Taylor to 85 million gallons a day and Harpool to 60 by 2028.

Only the well water comes with a hardness result. Page 10 of Mustang's report lists total hardness in the district's own well water at 4.773 ppm as calcium carbonate for 2025, between 3.68 and 5.48, alongside sodium of 222 ppm, total alkalinity of 530 ppm and total dissolved solids of 734 ppm, all of them figures for the wells and not for any town. Sherman's groundwater, from the same two aquifers in Grayson County, shows the pattern more strongly still in the report's Sherman table: hardness no higher than 5.45 ppm, sodium up to 604 ppm, dissolved solids up to 888. The Texas Water Development Board notes that Trinity water is very hard where the formation reaches the surface and that dissolved solids rise with depth; deep wells like these yield the sodium-heavy, calcium-poor water the tables show. The Upper Trinity section of the report lists bromate, arsenic, barium, fluoride at 0.26 ppm and turbidity, and nothing under hardness, calcium or magnesium; Upper Trinity's own 2025 report prints no hardness figure either. So no figure is shown for Paloma Creek, and this page does not lend the wells' number to a neighborhood that also drinks lake water.

The two waters behave differently in a house. Mustang's well water, under 6 ppm in the district's own table, leaves no ring in the kettle and lets soap lather on the first pass; lake water of the kind Dallas treats from the same Lewisville and Ray Roberts lakes, which Dallas puts at 120 to 155 mg/L in its own mains, roughly 7 to 9 grains, leaves white scale on fixtures and shortens a water heater's life. Which one is in the pipe on U.S. 380 on a given day, and in what proportion, is decided by the district's pumps and by demand, not by anything a homeowner can see, and no published table records it. We will not average two waters into a number that neither of them is. The free water test measures the water actually running in your kitchen, in ppm and grains per gallon, and a softener sized to the lake-water end of that result handles the hard weeks without straining against the soft ones.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Paloma Creek, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Paloma Creek.

Is Paloma Creek’s water hard?

No one has published a figure for it. Mustang's report gives 4.773 ppm, soft, for its own wells, and no result at all for the lake water Upper Trinity sends it along U.S. 380 or for the mix of the two. Lake water here is hard. A free water test at your tap gives Paloma Creek's actual number.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
