HOW HARD IS ROYSE CITY’S WATER?

200 ppm. That is 11.7 grains per gallon.
The City of Royse City water quality report lists a total hardness of 200 ppm as its highest result, with a reported range of 96 to 200 ppm (5.6 to 11.7 grains per gallon). On the USGS hardness scale that is moderately hard to very hard water.
COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER
What 11.7 grains per gallon looks like at home.
At about 11.7 grains per gallon, every one of these shows up in Royse City sooner or later. The water test tells you how soon.
Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: about 11.7 grains of dried mineral per gallon.
The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.
Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.
The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.
Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.
Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.
ROYSE CITY’S WATER, BY HARDNESS
Two district connections, one Wylie plant supply, 200 ppm at its peak
Royse City's 2025 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report lists two sources, and both are the same district. The source table shows one consecutive connection and one interconnect from the North Texas Municipal Water District, system TX0430044, each carrying purchased surface water, and the test results that follow carry the heading of the district's Wylie Water Treatment Plants for 2025. Royse City is one of the district's 13 member cities, and the district's own 2025 report says every member city and customer except the City of Bonham was served by the Wylie plant that year. Some northern systems also receive water from the Leonard plant, which opened in 2023 to treat Bois d'Arc Lake, and nine systems to the south and east also receive water from the Tawakoni plant, but Royse City appears on neither of those lists. Its water is Wylie water alone, a blend of Lavon Lake and Lake Texoma by the district's description. The federal facility record places those two delivery points behind two pump stations: Pump Station 1 at 1100 Center Street, with three 600 gallon-per-minute pumps and two of 1,500, and Pump Station 2, with two of 2,778 and one of 1,388, backed by a 2.0 million gallon ground tank on FM 548 and a 1.0 million gallon ground tank at Center Street and County Line Road, and by elevated tanks of 2 million gallons at Highway 66 and FM 2642 and 1.0 million on Verandah Boulevard, serving 11,084 connections and 24,313 people.
Page 6 of the report lists total hardness as calcium carbonate at 200 ppm, the highest value in 2025, with the range at 96.0 to 200 ppm. Chloride in the same table ran 29.0 to 92.5 ppm and zinc 0.006 to 0.016 ppm, small numbers that show how much of the mineral load is the calcium the report names as the source of the hardness. By the district's 17.12 divisor, 200 ppm is about 11.7 grains per gallon and 96 ppm about 5.6. The USGS scale puts 200 in the very hard class and 96 in moderately hard. For contrast, the district's Leonard plant printed 96.0 to 144 ppm for 2025, a narrower band that tops out in the hard class rather than very hard; Royse City does not receive that water, so the wider Wylie range is the one Royse City lives with. The district's own label for the water it sends out is moderately hard, with Lavon Lake's minerals as the reason. In the city's own 2025 tap sampling, lead came in at a 90th percentile of 1.02 ppb and copper at 0.953 ppm, under the action levels for both.
What the two connections give Royse City is redundancy, not two kinds of water. Both carry the same Wylie plant output, so a home near the old depot and one in a subdivision at the city's edge share the same hardness on the same day, and the whole city rides the same seasonal swing between 96 and 200. Royse City's report also prints the same Wylie data for sodium, 41.9 to 88.0 ppm, and total dissolved solids, 182 to 455 ppm, so a homeowner comparing notes with a neighbor in Fate or Rockwall will find identical numbers: the three cities are reading the same plant. The range is a year's spread, and the top end is the number to plan around: a softener rated for about 12 grains per gallon covers the 200 ppm months, and a metered valve cuts back on regenerations when the water comes in nearer 96. The free water test tells you which part of the range your tap is in today.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS
Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.
One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.
Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.
When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.
Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Royse City, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.
A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.
HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
The hard water FAQ for Royse City.
Is Royse City’s water hard?
Yes. Royse City's 2025 report prints the Wylie plant's total hardness at 200 ppm as the highest result, with a 96.0 to 200 ppm range, which is very hard on the USGS scale at the top, about 11.7 grains per gallon. Both of the city's district connections carry the same water, so size a softener to the 200 end.
Is hard water safe to drink?
Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.
Does a softener make my water salty?
No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
THE SOURCE MATTERS
Where the number comes from.
Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
