HOW HARD IS SAGINAW’S WATER?

76.5 to 175 ppm. That is 4.5 to 10.2 grains per gallon.
The Saginaw water quality report gives hardness as a range, 76.5 to 175 ppm, and prints no average, so we show the range rather than a number it never published. On the USGS hardness scale that spans moderately hard to hard water. Where your home falls in that range depends on the day and the season; a free water test tells you the number at your tap. Saginaw's figure is Fort Worth's own 2024 range for the water it sold; the city treats nothing itself and lists no wells of its own.
COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER
What 4.5 to 10.2 grains per gallon looks like at home.
At 4.5 to 10.2 grains per gallon, these show up across Saginaw; the high end of the range brings them faster. The water test tells you where your home sits.
Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: 4.5 to 10.2 grains of dried mineral per gallon.
The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.
Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.
The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.
Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.
Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.
SAGINAW’S WATER, BY HARDNESS
Fort Worth lake water, moderately hard to hard across the 2024 range
Saginaw's water story is Fort Worth's. The city's 2024 water quality report says it buys 100 percent of its drinking water from Fort Worth, that every treatment step happens at Fort Worth's plants, and that Saginaw's own job is to watch the chlorine residual in its pipes, which averaged 2.51 mg/L across 2024. Fort Worth runs five treatment plants, North Holly, South Holly, Rolling Hills, Eagle Mountain and Westside, and its planning documents describe a raw water network in which the Tarrant Regional Water District pumps Cedar Creek and Richland-Chambers water west to Lake Benbrook and ties Benbrook to Eagle Mountain Lake, so that the lake blend can be treated at the Eagle Mountain plant; the same documents rate that plant at 108 million gallons a day and the pump station and pipeline feeding it at 105 million. The district's lakes east of Dallas reach Tarrant County through more than 250 miles of pipeline. The water in a Saginaw tap is therefore a reservoir blend whose make-up shifts with where the district is pumping from.
The figure on this page for Saginaw is the range Fort Worth printed for 2024: 76.5 to 175 ppm of total hardness as calcium carbonate, which the same table states as 5 to 10 grains per gallon. On the USGS scale the low end is moderately hard and the high end is hard, a few ppm short of very hard. The report does not say which plant, lake or month produced each end, so we will not guess; the range is the spread Fort Worth measured across its system in a year. The companion rows show why the water moves that much. Calcium ran 23.6 to 61.5 ppm and magnesium 4.26 to 8.58 ppm, with total alkalinity 73.3 to 149 ppm and total dissolved solids 156 to 289 ppm. Calcium and magnesium are the two minerals hardness measures, and a year in which calcium more than doubles between samples is a year in which hardness does too. Sodium stayed in a narrow band, 22.9 to 31.5 ppm.
Saginaw's 2025 report, covering the following year, reprints Fort Worth's newer table at 108 to 150 ppm, or 6 to 9 grains, a tighter spread inside the 2024 one; the 2024 range stays on this page until the 2025 table has been verified. For a homeowner the lesson is the same either way: the water is never soft, and in the hardest months it sits near 10 grains. Because Saginaw adds nothing and blends nothing, two houses across town get the same water on the same day; the difference is between seasons, not streets. Size a softener to the top of the range, 10 grains, and let a metered valve regenerate less often when the blend runs softer, or get the day's number from the free water test.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS
Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.
One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.
Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.
When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.
Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Saginaw, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.
A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.
HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
The hard water FAQ for Saginaw.
Is Saginaw’s water hard?
Yes, moderately hard to hard. The figure on this page is Fort Worth's 2024 range, 76.5 to 175 ppm or 5 to 10 grains per gallon, printed in Saginaw's own report because Fort Worth supplies and treats all of the city's water. Expect scale on water heaters and spotting on glass in the harder months, and little difference from one street to the next.
Is hard water safe to drink?
Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.
Does a softener make my water salty?
No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.

Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
