Savannah.
No hardness figure on file for Savannah yet.

Savannah’s water comes through Mustang Special Utility District, whose report prints a hardness figure only for its own very soft wells, not for the lake water it also delivers.

COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What each grain per gallon looks like at home.

With no figure for Savannah, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

SAVANNAH’S WATER, BY HARDNESS

A planned community on wholesale lake water, now inside Mustang’s blended system

Savannah was never a city, so it never had a city water department. Huffines Communities broke ground on it along U.S. 380 in 2004, twelve builders worked there over the years, and the last homes were finished in 2024, 2,447 in all. Its water and sewer lines were built under Denton County Fresh Water Supply District No. 10 rather than a municipality. A 2015 appraisal filed with the state utility commission recorded the arrangement of the time: the fresh water district owned the lines inside Savannah and bought its water wholesale from the Upper Trinity Regional Water District, with Mustang Special Utility District as the contract operator. Mustang itself dates to May 13, 1966, when the Mustang Water Supply Corporation started with 50 connections and five board members. The district’s home office is in Aubrey today, and its newsletter measures the lake supply from there: Jim Chapman Lake lies about 90 miles east of that office. Upper Trinity’s second plant, Tom Harpool in Providence Village, is rated at 30 million gallons a day and takes part of the Chapman water, while the rest is released into Lewisville Lake for treatment at Tom Taylor.

That history matters for hardness because wholesale Upper Trinity water is treated lake water. Upper Trinity treats Lewisville and Ray Roberts lake water at its Tom Taylor plant and Jim Chapman Lake water at its Tom Harpool plant, and lake water carries the calcium and magnesium that scale a water heater and stop soap from lathering. Today Savannah is served as part of Mustang’s system, which blends that lake water with groundwater from the Trinity and Woodbine aquifers and with groundwater bought from the City of Sherman. Mustang’s 2025 report prints a total hardness figure only for its own wells, 4.773 ppm in a range of 3.68 to 5.48, with 222 ppm of sodium beside it: soft water with a sodium signature, the opposite of lake water. It prints nothing for the Upper Trinity water or for the blend. It does print a third table, for groundwater Mustang buys from the City of Sherman: sodium up to 604 ppm in 2025, total dissolved solids up to 888 ppm and total hardness of 5.45 ppm in 2023, on page 14, the same soft, sodium-heavy signature in stronger form, though the report ties that purchase to the former Marilee district rather than to any named town.

Which water reaches a Savannah tap, and in what proportion, is not something the report tells us, and the proportion moves with the season and with demand along the U.S. 380 corridor. The report’s four sampling addresses for disinfection byproducts are in Oak Point and Cross Roads, none in Savannah, and Upper Trinity’s own tables, reprinted on pages 10 and 11, list fluoride that the district does not add and turbidity but no hardness line. So we do not have a hardness figure for Savannah, and this page does not invent one. The free water test measures it where it counts, at your kitchen faucet, in ppm and grains per gallon; a result in the single grains says lake water, a result near zero says the wells, and either way we size the softener to what you actually have rather than to a district average that does not exist.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Savannah, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Savannah.

Is Savannah’s water hard?

We cannot say from the record. Savannah’s water comes through Mustang, whose report prints a figure only for its very soft wells and none for the Upper Trinity lake water that reaches the U.S. 380 subdivisions. A free water test at your kitchen tap settles it in one visit.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.

THE SOURCE MATTERS

Where the number comes from.

Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
