Seis Lagos.
312 ppm. That is 18.2 grains per gallon.

The Seis Lagos Utility District 2023 water quality report lists a total hardness of 312 ppm as its highest result, with a reported range of 82 to 312 ppm (4.8 to 18.2 grains per gallon). On the USGS hardness scale that is moderately hard to very hard water. The 312 ppm figure is the North Texas Municipal Water District's 2023 Wylie plant result as printed in the Seis Lagos report, and the district's 2025 Wylie figures run lower.

COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What 18.2 grains per gallon looks like at home.

At about 18.2 grains per gallon, every one of these shows up in Seis Lagos sooner or later. The water test tells you how soon.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: about 18.2 grains of dried mineral per gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

SEIS LAGOS’ WATER, BY HARDNESS

District water from the Wylie plant, with a 2023 reported range of 82 to 312 ppm

Seis Lagos Utility District's water is North Texas Municipal Water District water, and the Seis Lagos report is built around the data tables the regional district supplies for its Wylie treatment plants. The report the utility posts on its water quality page is the 2023 edition, the only one linked there, and each data page in it is headed with the Wylie plants' name rather than the district's own, a reminder that these are the supplier's results. The Wylie complex mixes Lavon Lake water with Lake Texoma water and is, by the regional district's description, the biggest facility of its type in the state. The regional district's water-quality guidance says the finished water is considered moderately hard, mainly because of the minerals in Lavon Lake, that those minerals are not a health matter, and that a homeowner can turn total hardness in mg/L into grains per gallon by dividing by 17.12.

Page 7 of the 2023 Seis Lagos report, under the heading for the Wylie plants' 2023 data, is where the figure on this page comes from. Total hardness as calcium carbonate is printed at 312 ppm as the highest level detected, in a range of 82 to 312, attributed to naturally occurring calcium. The rest of the table tells the mineral story: calcium 26.5 to 69.8 ppm, magnesium 4.90 to 9.77, sodium 26.5 to 95.4, chloride 30 to 107, sulfate 76.8 to 171, total alkalinity 51 to 139 and total dissolved solids 263 to 492 ppm, with pH from 6.39 to 9.17. On the USGS scale 82 ppm is moderately hard and 312 is very hard; with the district's divisor of 17.12 that is about 4.8 to about 18.2 grains per gallon. For comparison, the district's 2025 Wylie data sheet shows hardness from 96.0 to 200 ppm, calcium up to 61.3 and total dissolved solids up to 455, so the 2023 year printed in the Seis Lagos report was a harder, more mineral-laden year for the plant than 2025.

Every home in Seis Lagos is on this one supply, so there is no well water or second source to dilute it; the hardness at a tap on any of the community's streets is the hardness the Wylie plant sent that week. The 2023 range shows how much that can move within a single year, with the highest reading several times the lowest, as the Lavon and Texoma blend and the lake levels change. A softener sized only to a typical reading would be undersized in the months that produced the 312. We size to the top of the published range, which here means planning for about 18 grains, and we confirm with the free water test, which gives the number at your own tap on the day rather than a plant maximum from an earlier year.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Seis Lagos, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Seis Lagos.

Is Seis Lagos’ water hard?

Yes, by the district's own data. The Seis Lagos 2023 report prints total hardness of 82 to 312 ppm for the Wylie plant water it delivers, about 4.8 to 18.2 grains per gallon, from moderately hard up to very hard. The district's Wylie figures for 2025 were 96.0 to 200 ppm, so the number moves year to year.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.

THE SOURCE MATTERS

Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
