Shady Shores.
No hardness figure on file for Shady Shores yet.

Shady Shores shares the Lake Cities Municipal Utility Authority with Lake Dallas and Hickory Creek, a system that pumps wells and buys lake water, and its report gives no hardness figure we could read.

COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What each grain per gallon looks like at home.

With no figure for Shady Shores, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

SHADY SHORES’ WATER, BY HARDNESS

One shared authority since 1963, groundwater and Tom Taylor plant water

Shady Shores, on the Lewisville Lake shoreline along Interstate 35E seven miles southeast of Denton, incorporated in October 1960 and has never had a water department of its own. Its water comes from the Lake Cities Municipal Utility Authority, created in 1963 as a local government agency for Shady Shores, Lake Dallas and Hickory Creek and reconfirmed by an act of the 76th Legislature. Federal drinking-water records for the authority list three kinds of source: groundwater from its own wells, treated surface water bought from the Upper Trinity Regional Water District, and groundwater bought from the Harbor Grove Water Supply Corporation. That same federal record marks the Harbor Grove link as an emergency connection, and the authority’s own 2025 report table lists only its three working wells and two Upper Trinity connections as sources. The federal facility inventory lists a 300,000 gallon elevated tank listed at 412 Shady Shores and a North pump station at 109 Swisher Shores with four 1,000 gallon a minute pumps and a half million gallon ground tank.

Upper Trinity treats Lewisville and Ray Roberts lake water at its Tom Taylor plant in Lewisville, and that is where the hardness question turns for Shady Shores. Reservoir water picks up dissolved calcium and magnesium from the land it drains, and treated lake water in this part of Texas is generally moderately hard: the North Texas Municipal Water District, on the Collin County side, says exactly that of its own lake water and tells homeowners to divide mg/L by 17.12 for grains. Upper Trinity moves its water through more than 103 miles of pipeline to more than 20 member and customer utilities, treating an average of 30 million gallons a day, and its history counts its contract members as 21 cities and towns, one utility authority and three special districts. Its second plant, Tom Harpool in Providence Village, adds 30 million gallons a day of capacity on Jim Chapman Lake water, which is why the district table reprinted in the authority’s report labels the source as Lewisville and Chapman lakes. Groundwater from the deep Denton County sandstone is the opposite, soft and sodium-rich; the Mustang district’s wells in the same formations printed under 6 ppm in 2025. A home in Shady Shores can be on the lake water, the wells or a mix, and the proportion changes with demand and is not something the authority publishes by street.

We have not found a hardness figure for Shady Shores in the authority’s report, so this page gives none and does not substitute a neighbor’s. The report’s one Shady Shores sampling address, 213 Shadow Lane, appears only in the disinfection byproduct table, and nothing in its four pages speaks to minerals. The practical test is the one at your own tap: if the free water test reads in the single grains, you are on lake water and a softener sized to the high end of that reading will stop the scale; if it reads near zero, you are on the wells for now and the better buy is a filter for taste and chlorine. Either way the figure in ppm and grains per gallon is yours, measured, not inferred.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Shady Shores, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Shady Shores.

Is Shady Shores’ water hard?

Not from any published figure: the Lake Cities authority’s report prints none we could read, and the system mixes its own wells with Tom Taylor plant lake water. The free water test at your tap tells you whether you are on the soft wells or the harder lake water that day.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
