COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER
What each grain per gallon looks like at home.
With no figure for Travis Ranch, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.
Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.
The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.
Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.
The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.
Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.
Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.
TRAVIS RANCH’S WATER, BY HARDNESS
Purchased Wylie plant water through Forney Lake WSC, no hardness figure printed
Travis Ranch's water comes from a water supply corporation that owns no treatment plant and no lake. Forney Lake Water Supply Corporation's 2025 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report describes its supply as purchased surface water and lists two connections: a regular interconnect with the North Texas Municipal Water District, system TX0430044, with the location given as the Wylie Water Plant, and an emergency interconnect with the City of Heath. Every result in the corporation's tables, from arsenic to fluoride to trihalomethanes, is labeled as a North Texas MWD Wylie WTP sample, because the corporation tests what it buys. The district lists Forney Lake among its 34 customer cities and utilities, and on the service area page of its own 2025 report it names Forney Lake WSC among the systems that can also draw from its Tawakoni Water Treatment Plant, the plant on Lake Tawakoni that began operating in 2011. The corporation keeps its office in Rockwall, on State Highway 205.
What the district says about that water is consistent across both plants. Its treated water is moderately hard, it writes, mainly because of minerals in Lavon Lake such as calcium bicarbonate and magnesium carbonate, and it tells homeowners that dividing a report's total hardness in mg/L by 17.12 gives grains per gallon. The district's 2025 report prints the figures for each of its plants: the district's Wylie plants, the corporation's listed source, ran 96.0 to 200 ppm total hardness as calcium carbonate in 2025, with calcium 31.2 to 61.3 ppm and magnesium 6.27 to 9.44 ppm, and the district's Tawakoni plant ran 60.0 to 249 ppm on calcium of 24.6 to 47.3 ppm and magnesium of 2.52 ppm. Those are the district's numbers for the water leaving its plants, not a measurement at Travis Ranch. In grains the district's plant figures span roughly 3.5 to 14.5, from the soft end of the USGS scale to well into very hard.
Forney Lake's own report prints no hardness table at all, no secondary constituents section of any kind, so there is no figure for Travis Ranch and we do not print one. What a homeowner in the community can count on is that the water is reservoir water from one or both of two district plants, that it carries the calcium and magnesium those lakes dissolve from the land they drain, and that the blend reaching a given street can differ by season and by which interconnect is flowing. The emergency link to Heath, if it were ever opened, would bring in Wylie water bought through Rockwall, the same district supply by another route. A softener here is sized to what the tap actually shows, and a free water test is the way to that number, in ppm and grains, for your own house in Travis Ranch.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS
Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.
One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.
Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.
When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.
Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Travis Ranch, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.
A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.
HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
The hard water FAQ for Travis Ranch.
Is Travis Ranch’s water hard?
Probably, but we have no figure for Travis Ranch. Forney Lake WSC buys treated lake water from the North Texas Municipal Water District, which calls its water moderately hard; the district's 2025 plant tables ran 96.0 to 200 ppm at Wylie and 60.0 to 249 at Tawakoni. The corporation's own report prints no hardness number, so the free water test gives yours.
Is hard water safe to drink?
Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.
Does a softener make my water salty?
No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
