Watauga.
110 ppm. That is 6.4 grains per gallon.

The City of Watauga 2025 water quality report lists a total hardness of 110 ppm as its highest result. On the USGS hardness scale that is moderately hard water. Watauga's 110 ppm is the Trinity River Authority sample in its report; the same report prints Fort Worth's 108 to 150 ppm range, and Watauga's water arrives through North Richland Hills, which carries both.

COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What 6.4 grains per gallon looks like at home.

At about 6.4 grains per gallon, every one of these shows up in Watauga sooner or later. The water test tells you how soon.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: about 6.4 grains of dried mineral per gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

WATAUGA’S WATER, BY HARDNESS

Fort Worth and authority water by way of North Richland Hills, 110 ppm sample

Watauga's water comes to it secondhand, and the city makes no secret of it: the 2025 water quality report states that the city purchases water from North Richland Hills, which obtains it from surface water sources in Fort Worth, and Fort Worth's service area study of 2017 lists Watauga as served through North Richland Hills rather than as a direct wholesale customer. Lake Arlington, the Trinity River Authority's source, appears in the report's assessment section too, because North Richland Hills carries both suppliers' water. What Watauga owns is pressure and storage, and its showpiece is unusual: the city's FY22 budget describes the Tower Office Building as a composite tank holding two million gallons, wrapped around four floors of city offices, built in 1999 to give the city's 8,000 customers enough pressure for homes, businesses and fire protection. The Public Works offices sit inside it, so Watauga's water department does its work from inside the city's own water tank.

Watauga's report prints two tables of secondary constituents, one for each water its supplier carries, and the city's headline figure is the Trinity River Authority's sample: a total hardness reading of 110 ppm as calcium carbonate, collected February 27, 2025, with, in the same sample, 38.0 ppm of calcium, 3.68 of magnesium, 81 each of bicarbonate and total alkalinity, 194 of total dissolved solids, 27.5 of sodium and 48.9 of sulfate. The other table, a page away in the same report, is Fort Worth's 2025 data: a total hardness range of 108 to 150 ppm and 6 to 9 grains, with calcium topping out at 48.1 ppm, magnesium at 7.35, alkalinity at 124 and dissolved solids at 244 against the authority's 194. On the USGS scale 110 ppm is moderately hard, about 6.4 grains; Fort Worth's range runs from moderately hard at 108 to hard at 150. The 110 figure sits well inside that range, so the two tables agree with each other more than they differ.

Because North Richland Hills blends what it buys before any of it crosses the city line into Watauga's tower, a Watauga tap can be carrying the authority's Lake Arlington water, Fort Worth's blend from the West Fork and from East Texas, or both, and which it is on a given day is not something either city's report states. The honest expectation is the band the two tables draw together: 108 to 150 ppm, with 110 the single sample this page carries as the city's figure. Size a softener for the top of that band, about 8.8 grains to each gallon, so the unit is right whichever supplier is feeding the mains, with the free water test reading your tap directly; that reading is what we size to.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Watauga, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Watauga.

Is Watauga’s water hard?

Yes. Watauga's 2025 report prints the Trinity River Authority sample at 110 ppm total hardness, moderately hard on the USGS scale and about 6.4 grains per gallon, beside Fort Worth's 108 to 150 ppm range; the water reaches Watauga through North Richland Hills, which carries both. The free water test gives the figure at your tap.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
