108 to 150 ppm. That is 6.3 to 8.8 grains per gallon.
The Town of Westlake 2025 water quality report gives hardness as a range, 108 to 150 ppm, and prints no average, so we show the range rather than a number it never published. On the USGS hardness scale that spans moderately hard to hard water. Where your home falls in that range depends on the day and the season; a free water test tells you the number at your tap. Westlake's 108 to 150 ppm figure is the range Fort Worth published for 2025; the town's report reprints it beside Fort Worth’s dissolved solids, conductivity and sodium rows.
COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER
What 6.3 to 8.8 grains per gallon looks like at home.
At 6.3 to 8.8 grains per gallon, these show up across Westlake; the high end of the range brings them faster. The water test tells you where your home sits.
Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: 6.3 to 8.8 grains of dried mineral per gallon.
The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.
Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.
The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.
Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.
Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.
WESTLAKE’S WATER, BY HARDNESS
Fort Worth lake water as the town's single source, moderately hard to hard
Westlake's 2025 water quality report gives its printed page 9 to a table of secondary constituents, the rows that describe how water feels and tastes rather than whether it is safe. Total dissolved solids, the weight of everything dissolved in a liter, ran 182 to 244 ppm over the year. Conductivity, how readily the water carries a current and so a second gauge of its mineral load, ran 312 to 431 micromhos per centimeter. Sodium sat between 19.5 and 27.9 ppm, a low figure that says the dissolved load is rock mineral rather than salt. These are measurements Fort Worth made on the water it treats and sells, reprinted by the town, because Westlake owns no lake, well or plant of its own. The report states that the town buys its water from the City of Fort Worth, and the state's January 2024 Tarrant County summary names the Tarrant Regional Water District's lake system as Westlake's only current source, puts the town on its list of small systems dependent on one supply, and projects an unmet need of 3,563 acre-feet a year by 2070, 40 percent of demand.
In that same table Fort Worth prints its total hardness for 2025 as 108 to 150 ppm, a range it also states as 6 to 9 grains, and that Fort Worth range is the figure for Westlake: moderately hard at its low end and hard at its high end on the USGS scale. The dissolved solids and conductivity rows each move by about a third from low to high across the year, the same proportion as the hardness, which fits water in which the thing being measured each time is largely the same calcium and bicarbonate. Westlake's own pages of the report add what the town measures in its mains: lead at a 90th percentile of 1.65 parts per billion and copper at 0.292 ppm in 2025, both under their action levels, and a service line survey in the fall of 2024, done after the EPA chose the town for its Get the Lead Out initiative, that found no lead service lines anywhere in Westlake. Corrosion control itself is Fort Worth's job, done by pH adjustment, as the town's report notes.
A single wholesale source has consequences at a Westlake tap. There is no well water to dilute the lake blend and no second supplier to switch to, so the hardness in every home, from the Solana offices to the newest subdivision, is whatever Fort Worth's blend carried that week, and the backup emergency generator the town is installing exists to keep that one feed moving through an outage. It also means the district's composite lake level, which the report says governs watering restrictions, is a fair proxy for the supply: Westlake stood at Stage 1, Water Watch, in 2025, with midday sprinkler use barred. Month to month the blend tilts between the West Fork lakes and the eastern reservoirs the district pumps toward Lake Benbrook and Eagle Mountain Lake, and the hardness follows. For a softener, take the upper figure, 150 ppm or 9 grains per gallon, as the design point, and let the free water test show where the blend sits at your tap on the day.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS
Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.
One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.
Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.
When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.
Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Westlake, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.
A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.
HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
The hard water FAQ for Westlake.
Is Westlake’s water hard?
Yes. Every drop in Westlake is reservoir water treated by Fort Worth, and the Fort Worth table the town reprints shows total hardness of 108 to 150 ppm for 2025, which is 6 to 9 grains per gallon, a moderately hard to hard range. Dissolved solids and conductivity in the same table rise and fall with it through the year, so size for the top and test for the day.
Is hard water safe to drink?
Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.
Does a softener make my water salty?
No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
THE SOURCE MATTERS
Where the number comes from.
Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
